“I would have lost heart unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.” Psalm 27:13. This is the verse that we use to prove the phrase that we hear almost all services.
This verse is taken out of context. Jews were given all sorts of material blessings in the Old Testament whereas the New Testament focuses more on having a heavenly goal- to be with Christ. The land of the living in this context is the earth itself, but, as we come to the New Testament, the writers always has a desire for the Earth that is yet to come.
“Having a desire to depart and be with Christ,” Philippians 1:23. “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Romans 7:24. “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2. “For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.” Hebrews 13:14. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” Philippians 3:20. The verses go on!
How can a believer call this world the land of the living when we are waiting to be transformed into the image of Christ? Or are we lured by the preachers for just 70-80 years of life in here? Are we blinded by the ‘desires’ of this world? Or are we still focussing on Christ and His kingdom to come?
We ought to have a longing desire to be with Christ. Each day must make us close to Christ rather than making our roots deeper in this world!
Let’s look above for eternity and to have a life with Christ!
