Holiness was one of the major topics being twisted and taught in the church for the past decades. The ‘standards’ of holiness is amended over the centuries to accommodate the cultural influences and also to go in line with the worldliness. Things that were unholy become holy as centuries passed by.
The Bible gives more importance to holiness and separation from the world. We give more importance to the other attributes of God than Holiness. We preach more about the love of God, immutability of God, infinite nature of God, and so on.
From my childhood, I have heard many churches praying for ‘revivals’ to begin in their churches and to be spread to the ends of the world! But, have never seen any churches praying for an encounter with God so that we can amend our lives to be holy and to be prepared for the revival. Revivals begin when we have a heart for a true encounter with God- identifying our sins, repenting, and turning back to God.
Holiness is not something to be preached only when we have the LORD’s supper, not when we have a fasting prayer, or when we are taking a serious step in life. Holiness must be preached and followed in each moment of our life.
It takes courage to preach the truth in the churches. It may affect the ‘monetary benefits’ of the preachers but, always remember, “For do I now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10.
Our sermons must make the listeners have a desire for eternal life and an unquenching thirst to be with the LORD. Let’s focus more on godliness and His attributes rather than becoming ambassadors of this world!
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” Philippians 3:20-21
