Psalm 8 is written by David. David speaks of the glory of God, and how the glory of man and his destiny reflect upon God.
Devotional Portion: Psalm 8:1-2
O LORD, our LORD, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
Psalms 8:1 NKJV
David glorifies the LORD by saying Our God is our Master. He brings in the covenant name of God and the position of Yahweh to His people. He is the one who rules, directs, judges and who sustains and supports all men.
Though David speaks of the covenant of God, the excellence of His name is proclaimed over all the earth. Everything that has breath is praising the excellence of His name as He is the one who cares and sustains them.
The glory of the LORD is immeasurable and is above the heavens. Even the heavens declare the glory of the LORD without words and language. All the creation reveals the glory of the LORD and rejoices in His might. He is the only hope and they wait in pain for the coming of the LORD.
Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants, You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
Psalms 8:2 NKJV
In the first verse, David explained the greatness of His evident poser and glory in creation- on the earth and in the heavens, in this verse, David is touching on a theme of the strength of God. Babies and infants are feeble beings, yet God can ordain strength out of the mouth of babies and nursing infants. He gives support to us amid our weaknesses. His grace is all we need to overcome our weakness and finish the race set before us. Maclaren quotes “The word here rather means a strength…that, out of such frail material as children’s speech, God builds a tower of strength, which, like some border castle, will bridle and still the restless enemy.”
Why did God put strength in the feeble? To silence the enemy. The weak have nothing to boast and the enemy could see the hand of the LORD as He provided strength to the feeble. It’s not the human effort or might nor by the power, but for His glory through the Spirit of God.
Reflection: Glorify Him, the LORD as He chose us- the weak and who lived in sins, made us whole and righteous.
