Devotional Portion: Psalms 10:14-15
But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand.
As the psalmist spend his time in the presence of the LORD, he recognized that God has indeed seen the trouble and grief of the poor and the needy. Apostle Paul in Hebrews 4:13 says, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” The all-seeing eye of God is watching everything in patience. He is sovereign and He is merciful. From His presence, there is no fleeing. The castle of false hope of the wicked crumbles down when the LORD rises for the needy.
The gracious time of His silence was the time for the wicked to repent, but, as they haven’t turned back to God, He will repay it by His hand.
The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.
The helpless submit, and gave up themselves in the hands of God. “Resigning their judgment to his enlightenment, and their wills to his supremacy — they rest assured that He will order all things for the best. Nor does He deceive their hope. He preserves them in times of need, and causes them to rejoice in His goodness.” (Treasury of David, Charles Spurgeon).
You are the helper of the fatherless
The Lord will take care of the fatherless. When the earthly father forsakes us, the heavenly father takes care of us. With His mighty hands, He leads us in the way everlasting. His faithfulness endures forever.
Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
The psalmist prays, let the wicked lose their power to sin and oppress the needy. His prayer has a theme for cleansing the wicked too. “Seek out his wickedness until You find none.” In other words, the psalmist was showing his righteous anger towards the wicked. Let them turn to good and know God well.
“God permits tyrants to arise as thorn-hedges to protect his church from the intrusion of hypocrites, and that he may teach his backsliding children by them, as Gideon did the men of Succoth with the briers of the wilderness. But he soon cuts up these Herods, like the thorns, and casts them into the fire!” (Treasury of David, Charles Spurgeon).
Reflection: Pray for those who persecute you. Let His mercy shine upon them so that they will repent and turn to the Lord.
