Devotional Portion: ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭14:2-3‬

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

David is explaining the heart of the Lord in these verses. He is looking down from heaven upon the children of men. From the book of Genesis, we can see God looking down on the children of men. When man sinned, He came down and met them in the garden. He came down and observed the works when the children of men were building the tower of Babel. He came down and inquired before He destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, He looked down upon the wickedness of the people before destroying them with flood during the time of Noah. In all these instances, He was looking for even a single person who is after His heart. He was looking to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.

Seeking God became a folly even to those who proclaim as believers. And many who follow God have no solid foundation in the true essence of who He is. They are building their faith upon the sand. The faith most people have is founded upon the materials, or they have corrupted the minds of the people to believe that God is bound upon our prayers.

David adds an equation in this verse, faith = understanding God + seeking Him. Many fail in this as they are seeking something that they are not aware of. When we know God and seek Him, we expect less but we will have the heart to know His heart more deeply. When we lack this understanding- the sovereignty of the Almighty, we try to squeeze Him into our little knowledge and try to make Him a genie for our material needs.

They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

The sad part- when God looks, the man has turned away from him and has therefore become corrupt. “What a picture of our race is this! Save only where grace reigns, there is none that doeth good; humanity, fallen and debased, is a desert without an oasis, a night without a star, a dunghill without a jewel, a hell without a bottom.” (Spurgeon)

Reflection: Are we seeking Him by knowing who He is?
