When like a firefly, we decide to let our little light glow from the inside then nothing from the outside can ever dim the glow. No one’s rejection or cold shouldering does ever determine our true worth and value in Christ, because our identity is not what others say today. Instead it is what God devised even before we were formed in our mother’s womb. And our journey to the discovery of our identity in Christ should be sensitive to the Word furthermore being insensitive to the world.
The title ‘Son of God’ is mentioned more than 15 times in the Gospels. The Gospels record the events when the Heavenly Father Himself gave proof of Jesus’ heirship throughout the earthly life of Christ. It is in Matthew 3:17, ‘and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased”‘ we come across the title for the first time. Later in the next chapter, we read that the tempter comes to Jesus and questions, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Matthew 4:3). And Jesus, unlike us instead of proving His ownership of a legal heir certificate, He rebuked and resisted satan.
In the New Testament, the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus following his arrest in Jerusalem and prior to his dispensation by Pontius Pilate – We find Jesus is generally quiet, He does not mount a defense, and rarely responds to the accusations, but is condemned by the Jewish authorities for various accusations: like claiming to be both the Messiah and the Son of God. Likewise, when He is on the cross we read that the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, made sport of Him, saying, “He rescued others from death; Himself He cannot rescue from death. He is the King of Israel? Let Him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in and acknowledge and cleave to Him. He trusts in God; let God deliver Him now if He cares for Him and will have Him, for He said, I am the Son of God. The robber who was crucified with Him also abused and reproached and made sport of Him in the same way.” (Matthew 27:41-44).
Hence it is crystal clear that:
- There is always a long list of oppositions and queries from the world with an intention to cause dubiety, uncertainty and confusion against the promises of God.
- The world could never decipher the true identity of Christ so as His followers, the interpretation that the world has to offer about our identity shouldn’t be our conviction.
We don’t find Christ putting up a magisterial confirmation to any of the above interrogations related to His divine sonship. The reason is, that Christ never doubted the assurance in the reality and truth of His heirship nor in the goodness of God. It is up to us to deduce and ascertain whether to relish the ‘heirdom’ of referring Him “Abba! Father!”, as a son, and if a son, then an heir through God and no longer live as doubtful ones (as slaves)(Galatians 4:4–7) when we are encompassed with unwelcome hassles.
Even in the darkest of nights it is the tiny fire (glow) inside the fly that pierces the darkness, which distinguishes itself as a firefly. And when it doesn’t glow it is nothing but a mere fly!
Keep glowing for Him!
Have a great day!
