Psalm 11 is written by David. The psalm is divided into two. a) Verse 1-3, The assault he faced from his friends; verse 4-7, the way he responded to the adversaries.

Devotional Portion: Psalm 11:1

In the Lord I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?

This verse contains a temptation to distrust God by them (it might be his friends or family). We could see similar instances from friends and family to distrust God when the saint is going through difficult phases of life.

  1. Nehemiah: When we read Nehemiah 6, we can see the opposition by Sanballat against Nehemiah. They were raising threats to make Nehemiah go off from the call of the LORD. He replied with confidence, “should a man like me run away?” And he was good at discerning the plans of the enemies, “I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.” (Nehemiah 6:12).
  2. Job: When Job was going through the hard situation, his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” Job 2:9. His reply was full of confidence and trust in the Lord. “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Job 2:10.

Here, David was confident in the Lord. “In the Lord, I put my trust; How can you say to my soul,” It was evident from his life that David trusted the Lord. They were being used as a weapon in the hands of Satan.

Why do we have to go through such a situation?

  1. To make us sin by denying the sovereignty of God,
  2. To make us go off from the call by God,
  3. To destroy our confidence in God, and,
  4. To make us flee like a Godless person.

How can we overcome it?

  1. Trust in the LORD,
  2. Be sure of the call upon our lives,
  3. Discern the words from others, and,
  4. Pray for the guidance of God before jumping into conclusion.

In here, the friends asked David to flee like a bird, but he was confident in the Lord and trusted the valleys of his life.

Reflection: Be watchful and discern the people around you. Pray before you take any decision.
