Key Chapter: Nehemiah 3

While reading, Nehemiah 3, we see different kinds of people involved in the work of the wall. The chapter begins, “Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate.” The High Priest was never supposed to be involved in these sort of works, but as their common goal was to restore Jerusalem to its former glory, everyone put their hands together for the works, irrespective of their position or age. As a leader, Nehemiah was able to bring people of different views, positions and tastes together. He could make the “high” and the “low” work together. He made the high priest work along with a man who was considered of low level in the community. This created a level of equality, with no disparity, among the people, making them feel that they are one; together, they could achieve greater heights.

Also, Nehemiah was very good in assigning tasks, depending on people’s abilities. Thus, they were accountable to the leader to finish the work within the deadline, in a perfect manner.

If Nehemiah was unable to hold all the people together, there would have risen questions about equality. When equality is lost in a church or in an organization, its downfall starts. The works become more mechanical, than from the heart.

Practical Living: At times, GOD will make us work together. We may have to build, repair and consecrate our works for the LORD, and it can only be done when our goal becomes focused just like the leader. When GOD makes you a leader, make sure to hold the weakest and the strongest together. Let no disparity arise in the task and let’s work together for the LORD.
