Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil- Matthew 4.
The two facts this verse enlighten us with are:

  1. It isn’t the devil who chooses or plans circumstances in the life of God’s children. A child of God is led by the Spirit deliberately into wilderness of life to be tempted by devil but the story doesn’t end there.
  2. Chapter 4 begins with ‘then’ which points to the fact that this statement is associated or related to the earlier piece of verses from chapter 3. A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17). Which means you aren’t led directly into wilderness, and at the end of a trial, you are awarded with an attestation of your value from God. No, it is always the other way around.

The one who is God certified is directed into wilderness escorted by the Spirit of God. And when He is involved, trials doesn’t make an appearance until God equips you for them. Fasting isn’t recommended after a trial has striked in. Fasting is a sacrificial lifestyle- when we humbly deny some things of the flesh to enhance our spirit, and go deeper in our prayer life, for a deeper fellowship and focus in God. It is a process of reworking and updating before an examination (Vs. 2, 3).

A wilderness or a byway, generally referred as a secondary road, is usually much less traveled than a highway. A track, often rural, which is too minor to be called a road, routes that are often unsurfaced, where traveling in mechanically propelled vehicles is excluded (where there’s none or nothing to encourage and support). A wilderness is always tougher and hence less preferred. From the Scriptures, it is evident that every wilderness ends with a promise: “Then the devil left Him; and angels came and ministered to Him (bringing Him food and serving Him)”- a promise of His provision and care (Matthew 4:11). The LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. (Exo. 13:21).

A wilderness unlatches greater promises and faithfulness of God towards us. Whose by product is greater strength and bigger disclosures or revelations from His presence.

When God redirects you off of a highway to a byway, know that God is well pleased with you and well planned about a season of greater favour.

Wilderness is a blessing in disguise!
Have a great day!
