Devotional Portion: ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16:4-6‬

Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, Nor take up their names on my lips. O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.

David is explaining the sorrow of the people who follow other gods- who try to get the favor of their god by doing rituals and or even hurting themselves, but they have no answer from their god. Their sorrows are multiplying. His determination proclaims that he won’t be a part of them or their sacrifices.

On the contrary, David is elaborating the goodness of Yahweh and the relationship he has with God. “The portion of my inheritance and my cup.” God said to the priests in the days of Moses: “I am your portion and your inheritance” (Numbers 18:20). David understood that this was a promise given not only to the priests, but also to all who would trust God to be the portion of their inheritance. “Every godly man has the same possession and the same prohibitions as the priests had. Like them he is landless, and instead of estates has Jehovah.” (Maclaren)

Having God as your portion is the greatest inheritance a child of God can have. And as God is his portion, He will maintain his lot. His heart was filled with contentment. His heart is filled with joy and thanks as God has taken care of him. A Christian must have a heart of contentment in this generation of discontentment and restlessness. A content heart will never search for the trash of this world.

As Paul encourages in Colossians 3:2, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Let our hearts be fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2).

Reflection: Check out lives, have we shifted our focus from Jesus Christ or are we walking with Him?
