Devotional Portion: ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭12:6-7‬

The words of the Lord are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times. You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

We see a contrast in the previous verse to this verse. The previous explained the flattering lips and the tongues that speak proud things, but in this, the psalmist explains the pure word of Jehovah. “What a contrast between the vain words of man, and the pure words of Jehovah. Man’s words are yea and nay, but the Lord’s promises are yea and amen.” (Spurgeon) “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” Matthew 5:37; “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20. His words are holy, faithful, and are certain and none can change them with their schemes. The purity of the word of God is elaborated by comparing it with the purity of refined silver. A note to the preachers put there, make sure that you are preaching the Word of God (scriptures) with the same purity that which it was given to us. Never try to adulterate the Word of God by adding impurities of self-centeredness and sinful thoughts. “The Bible has passed through the furnace of persecution, literary criticism, philosophic doubt, and scientific discovery, and has lost nothing but those human interpretations which clung to it as alloy to precious ore. The experience of saints has tried it in every conceivable manner, but not a single doctrine or promise has been consumed in the most excessive heat.” (Spurgeon)

You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

Here we see the confidence of David in the word of God as He will keep them safe. There are some manuscripts and Bible translations that render this You shall keep us, O LORD, You shall preserve us. Yet, according to VanGemeren, there is legitimate manuscript support for the rendering You shall keep them…You shall preserve them. We can take it as true that God will keep and preserve both His Word and His people.

Reflection: The Lord preserves and protects His people and all His words are true and amen.
